20 May 2026On 18th May 2026, Ms. Leena Rikkilä Tamang, Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), called on the Hon’ble Chairperson of the National Council of Bhutan and held discussions on strengthening parliamentary democracy, institutional capacity, and citizen engagement.
During the meeting, the Hon'ble Chairperson acknowledged the continued partnership and support extended by International IDEA to the Parliament of Bhutan through the “Nyamdrel” project. The collaboration has significantly contributed to strengthening democratic institutions, parliamentary effectiveness, transparency, and citizen participation in Bhutan.
The discussions highlighted the key achievements under Nyamdrel I (2021–2023), including the Parliamentary Resource Management System, strengthened parliamentary communication platforms, digitalization initiatives, and youth sensitization and civic engagement programmes.
The Chairperson also appreciated the continued progress under Nyamdrel II in enhancing the institutional and professional capacity of Members of Parliament and parliamentary staff. Support areas include strengthening committee hearings and oversight functions, promoting research and evidence-based policymaking, budget scrutiny and legislative analysis, and improving strategic communication and public outreach.
