The Natural Resources and Environment Committee (NREC) has continued its consultations on the Marriage Act (Amendment) Bill 2026, engaging students, faculty members, and Dzongkhag officials in preparation for deliberation at the 38th Session of the National Council.

On 10 August 2026, the Committee consulted students and faculty members of the College of Science and Technology (CST). The discussions focused on the provisions of the Marriage Act of Bhutan 1980 and the proposed amendments, including the rights and responsibilities of spouses, protection of families, and the relevance of existing provisions to current circumstances.

On 11 August, consultations were held with students and faculty members of Samtse College of Education (SCE) and officials of the Samtse Dzongkhag Administration, including representatives from the Dzongkhag Court. The discussions provided perspectives on the implementation of the existing Act, its implications for families and children, and areas requiring greater clarity and improvement.

The consultation continued on 13 August at Jigme Namgyel Engineering College (JNEC) in Samdrupjongkhar. Students and faculty members shared their views on the proposed amendments and raised issues concerning the consistency of the Act with other laws and its applicability in the current context.

The Committee will continue consultations with other academic institutions and Dzongkhag Administrations in the coming days.
